9 Unexpected Home Features Buyers Appreciate Mos

September 17th, 2026 by Amanda Stuchell

Buyers may not prioritize these features during their home search, but they often become their favorites after they move in.

Practically every buyer has a wishlist before they purchase a home. Open floorplans, beautiful kitchens and great neighborhoods usually are at the top. But once they've settled in, many homeowners often discover that the features they appreciate most aren't always the ones they expected.

Experts at Tri Pointe Homes Las Vegas and Tri Pointe Homes Arizona have started to noticed some trends. Here are nine design features they've found consistently rise to the top after move-in.

    1. Prep Zone

Home buyers understand the appeal of extra kitchen space, but its everyday usefulness becomes clearer after move-in. A prep zone keeps cooking, cleanup and small appliances tucked away while the main kitchen remains open for gathering, making entertaining feel easier and everyday life feel a little less cluttered.

    2. Multi-Generational Living Plans

Homes that can adapt to changing needs often provide lasting value. Multi-generational living floorplans that incorporate what Tri Pointe calls "GenSmart Suites" provide private living areas that can comfortably serve multiple generations and needs. These flexible spaces are adaptable, also being used as a dedicated home office or for other purposes as lifestyle needs evolve.

    3. Game Rooms Between Secondary Bedrooms

Game rooms positioned between secondary bedrooms provide space for activities beyond the main living areas. Whether used for homework, gaming, crafts, movie nights or spending time together in a more personal space, these adaptable spaces offer versatility that can respond to changing needs over time.

    4. Accessory Garages

Oversized garages aren't just useful for RV owners. Many homeowners find themselves using the additional space in entirely different ways. Workshops, home gyms, golf carts, outdoor gear, seasonal storage or hobby spaces can be just as valuable as vehicle storage.

    5. Whole-Home Wellness

Energy-efficient construction, healthier indoor air, abundant natural light, thoughtful room flow and water-saving technologies can improve everyday comfort long after closing. Tri Pointe's LivingSmart and LivingWell options offer whole-home wellness features that demonstrate how a home's performance and overall livability can work together to support healthier, more comfortable daily living.

    6. Covered Outdoor Living

In climates where outdoor living is possible during much of the year, covered outdoor living areas often become natural extensions of the home. Morning coffee, dinner with loved ones, watching the game or simply relaxing outside all become part of everyday routines rather than occasional activities.

    7. Corner Multi-Panel Sliding Glass Doors

Large sliding glass walls can create a strong first impression during a showing, but many homeowners also soon learn how they can support indoor-outdoor living. Entertaining becomes easier, natural light increases, and decks begin functioning as additional living rooms instead of separate destinations.

    8. Terraced Neighborhood Design

Neighborhood planning isn't always top of mind during a home search, but homeowners often notice its benefits over time. Terraced home sites can open certain sightlines, create greater privacy between neighbors, and establish more visually appealing streetscapes—which can continue adding value long after move-in day.

    9. Extended Kitchen Island

An extended kitchen island often becomes one of the home's most relied-upon surfaces. The extra space can help the kitchen function with greater ease throughout the day, from unpacking groceries and serving meals to creating extra room for work, hobbies or conversation.
