The Most Hated Paint Color Is Getting a Second Chance

July 30th, 2026 by Amanda Stuchell

This color has been called the biggest turn off when selling a home. But the paint firm Sherwin-Williams wants to change your mind.

By: Melissa Dittmann Tracey

Lime green doesn't typically rank high in real estate. In fact, last year the bright greenish hue was called the most off-putting interior color to use when selling a home, according to Fixr.com.

In a housing world where neutral palettes dominate, the bold hue has often been labeled more "buyer beware" than "buyer attraction."

Despite that, the paint giant Sherwin-Williams is making a case for reconsideration with its self-described "loneliest color of 2026." Its shade—Offbeat Green SW 6706—is a vivid, citrus-like lime that the company has built an entire campaign around to challenge the color's long-perceived bad rap.

It's an intentionally polarizing choice, and even the brand acknowledges it takes confidence to pull off. But, as Sherwin-Williams puts it, "confidence comes from trusting your taste, your choices and your ability to shape a space that feels like home."

While not a mainstream pick, proponents argue that "the loneliest color of 2026" may be precisely the jolt that more interiors need. In a neutral-heavy backdrop, unexpected color can become a differentiator.

"It balances brightness with warmth in a way that feels both fresh and livable," says Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams. "This year's Loneliest Color shows that even an unexpected choice can become something beautiful and approachable in the right setting. It's a powerful reminder that the most authentic spaces are the ones shaped by what feels right to you, not by what's popular."

Sherwin-Williams is also highlighting the color through its "Loneliest Color" campaign in collaboration with the LeBron James Family Foundation, which supports first-time home buyers in Akron, Ohio. The campaign is showing how to reframe even overlooked color choices, like lime green, into accessibility and potential for new homeowners.
