From Cocktail Pools to High-Tech: 5 Pool Trends to Watch

August 11th, 2026 by Amanda Stuchell

Pool design is changing as homeowners seek more personalized outdoor spaces that blend recreation, relaxation and technology.

By: Melissa Dittmann Tracey

Today's pools are about far more than swimming. They're becoming outdoor gathering spaces, wellness retreats and even smart-home extensions. John Owens, CEO of Anthony & Sylvan Pools, shares five trends shaping backyard pools today.

Trend #1: Pools complete outdoor living spaces.

More homeowners are designing their pools as part of a complete outdoor living environment rather than treating them as a standalone feature. Pools are increasingly planned alongside outdoor kitchens, dining areas, fire pits and lounge spaces, creating a seamless extension of the home.

"The pool is being designed alongside other elements of the home and backyard to make the space feel more like a true extension of the house, and a multi-use space for everything from wellness and relaxation to hosting," Owens says.

Trend #2: Resort-style designs continue to grow.

Clean lines and upscale finishes remain in demand as homeowners look to create a resort-like feel at home. Geometric pool shapes are especially popular, along with statement features that turn the pool into the centerpiece of the backyard.

Owens says buyers are requesting features like tanning ledges, integrated spas, overflow edges, fire bowls and decorative water features that elevate both the appearance and functionality of the space.

Trend #3: Smart technology takes over pool care.

Managing a pool has become much easier due to smart-home technology. Many new pools now offer app-based controls that allow homeowners to adjust lighting, water temperature, pumps and water features from their smartphones. The technology is "making pools feel easier than ever to operate and enjoy regularly," Owens says.

Trend #4: Wellness takes center stage.

For many homeowners, the pool is becoming part of a healthier lifestyle. Heated water, integrated spas, hydrotherapy jets and shallow lounging areas are transforming backyards into personal wellness retreats.

Rather than building a pool solely for recreation, many families are looking for spaces where they can unwind, reduce stress, enjoy everyday relaxation and exercise, Owens says.

Trend #5: Cocktail pools make a big splash.

Bigger isn't always better. Smaller "cocktail pools"—sometimes called plunge or compact pools—are growing in popularity, especially for homeowners with limited yard space or those who want room for outdoor dining and landscaping, Owens says.

Despite their smaller footprint, these pools often include luxury features such as built-in seating, spa jets, heating, tanning ledges, as well as accent lighting and premium finishes.

"For many families, it's less about the size of the pool and more about how well the space supports the way they want to live at home," Owens says.
